Facts

Only 57% of local teens report that they have had a good talk with their mother about the risks of drinking and using drugs in the past year.

To Be A Safe Home…

As a party host…Educate yourself about the signs and dangers of underage alcohol use or other drug use.

  • If a youth attending a gathering at your house is under the influence or in possession of alcohol or other drugs, call their parents
  • If necessary, be prepared to call law enforcement
  • As a parent be a visible host. If youth leave and you suspect they are leaving to use, let them know they may not return
  • Encourage ‘invitation only’ parties to avoid party crashers.

If your child has been invited to a party…Verify the occasion and location

  • Check on adult supervision
  • Talk with the hosts to be sure there will be no drugs or alcohol
  • If you are unsure, trust your instincts and keep your child home/provide another activity for them and a few friends
  • If you are concerned about an upcoming party in the area, call Project Monitor
536-1804 ex. 7 and anonymously report your concerns so police can communicate with the hosts before the party begins to prevent potentially harmful situations

In general…get to know your teenager’s friends and their parents

  • Assure your teens that they can phone you to be picked up whenever needed
  • Be awake (or awaken) when young people come home at night
  • Know where your children are and let them know where you are
  • Let them know your expectations, have meaningful consequences, and set the bar high!
